I don't normally have short-term goals for poker and instead just treat each game as part of one long session that lasts my entire poker life. I do keep track of yearly accounting and I also implement new strategies to see how they work in a couple of sessions. However, I have never tried to win a specific amount in a certain amount of time to make a purchase or pay off some debt.
Well, that now changes as I am trying to win enough to buy a new refrigerator for my wife by April 7. The fridge we want is on sale for something like half price at the moment. So instead of having to pay more than $3,400, if I can pull together about $1,800 I will be able to make my wife a little happier and also make my life easier since the ice maker on the current machine is starting to act up.
I have $900 in my bankroll at the moment, so worst case scenario I would only have to win $900 or pull it from our savings account, but I want to challenge myself to try and play four or five times in the next six days and see if I can average $400-500 of profit per session. If I can do that then my bankroll doesn't take a hit, our savings account stays intact, and we get a new fridge.
I'm going to treat the next week like a scene from Rounders where I have to make enough to save Worm from getting the crap beat out of him and possibly killed. While I've had good sessions and come up with multiple profits in a row throughout my playing history, I don't really play so frequently in a small amount of time and force the issue with having to win. Hopefully this doesn't backfire on me and I post two or three horrible sessions in a row to where I lose my bankroll, dip into savings, and don't get a new fridge.
I'll keep you posted in about a week as to how this goes.
